What's the Deal with UTIs?

Getting a urinary tract infection is so frustrating. If you’ve ever experienced the awful discomfort that’s associated with this common bladder infection, you’re not alone. Lots of women (and some men) get them. Unfortunately, they’re also not one-and-done — many people experience more than one during their lifetimes.

Fortunately, eMed’s UTI Telehealth Kit let you test for UTIs at home and receive same-day treatment if your results indicate an infection. Let’s dive into the facts, shall we?

So, what exactly is a UTI?

A urinary tract infection is an infection that occurs in any part of your urinary system. That includes your urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Most UTIs happen in your lower urinary tract — your bladder and urethra. However, if left untreated, they can spread to your kidneys and cause serious health issues.

Who gets UTIs?

As we mentioned, UTIs can happen to both men and women, though women tend to be more at risk. It’s because women’s urethras are shorter than men’s, so bacteria can more easily traverse them to the bladder.

A few additional factors can also heighten your risk of getting a UTI, including:
- Being sexually active.
- Staying in a bathing suit or wet clothes for a prolonged duration.
- Holding in your pee, such as on a long flight.
- Using certain kinds of birth control, like diaphragms or spermicidal agents.
- Being post-menopausal.

What does a UTI feel like?

You probably remember the symptoms vividly if you’ve ever had a urinary tract infection. These include a solid and persistent urge to pee, a burning sensation when peeing, and cloudy, bright pink, red, or brown urine. UTIs can also trigger pelvic pain in women.

How can I treat a UTI?

UTIs are most commonly treated with antibiotics. It used to be that to get treatment, you had to be tested at an urgent care facility or doctor’s office. Today, you can take an over-the-counter test and get a positive result, but you won’t get a physician evaluation or treatment.

eMed introduced testing kits that are all-inclusive, and that you can take from the comfort and privacy of your home. All you have to do is scan the QR code on your kit to begin your telehealth session. A trained proctor will walk you through instructions on collecting and testing your sample.

It takes about 15 minutes to process the results. If those results indicate an active infection, a licensed healthcare clinician will evaluate your symptoms, prescribe you treatment, and have it sent to your preferred pharmacy. It’s that easy.

The test, clinical evaluation, and treatment are all included in the cost of the eMed Women’s Health Kit.

When should I order a testing kit?

UTI symptoms are painful and uncomfortable. Without treatment, these infections can be dangerous. That’s why we recommend stocking up on testing kits even if you’re symptom-free. Our kits last up to two years, so you can order them now and have them ready when you start experiencing symptoms.
